In accordance with the provisions of the Austrian federal constitution (Articles 115 to 120), the municipality has its own area of influence as well as an area of influence assigned by the country or federal province (Land), i.e. the municipality is both a regional administrative body with the right to self-governance and an administrative district.
The municipality directory shows these administrative subdivisions. It includes all the municipalities in Austria. The municipality is assigned a 5-digit municipality identifier. Assignment of the municipality identifier is the responsibility of Statistics Austria (Address Register Order – AdrRegV, Federal Law Gazette 218/2005, §1).
The first digit in the municipality code refers to the federal province and the first 3 digits are identical to the political district code.
An extended directory is available for statistical surveys/analyses. The municipality is assigned a municipality code. With the exception of Vienna, which is divided into 23 municipal districts, the municipality code is identical to the municipality identifier.
This means that Vienna is stored as an identifier (90001) in terms of the administrative classification whereas the Viennese municipal districts have their own codes (90101 to 92301).
In addition, the status (SS = town with charter, ST = urban municipality, M = market town and blank = municipality without status) is shown for each municipality as well as the postal code of the municipal office and other postal codes of the delivery post offices.
