Environmental goods and services sector in 2008: significant environmental turnover and "green jobs" in Austria

Vienna, 3 March 2010 – 185 145 "Green Jobs" in the field of environmental production, services and distribution show the significance of environmental economics in Austria. This notes a new comprehensive study of Statistics Austria on the "Environmental Goods and Services Sector" (EGSS) for the year 2008.

The production of environmental goods, technologies and services (without distributive trades) employs 162 986 people, turnover amounts to € 29.8 billion. 57.4% of these eco-employees are engaged in environmental protection activities, this relates to 41% of turnover. 59% of turnover is conducted by 42.6% of eco-employees with resource management activities.

The service sector with 41% of environmental turnover turns out to be the core area of the environmental protection and resource management activities, 45% of eco-employees work in this sector. Environmental goods generate 41.8% of turnover (41.8% of employment), environmental technologies amount to 17.7% of turnover (12.9% of employment) of the EGSS.

The management of energy resources is an important field of activity of the EGSS: 31.9% of eco-employees (almost 52 000 persons), generate 46% of the environmental turnover (about € 13.7 billion). A wide range of activities is summarized under this domain: e.g. the production of renewable energy, renewable energy technologies, low energy buildings and the insulation of buildings.
