Registrations of new passenger cars in February 2010: +15.7%, loss in February 2009 almost compensated

Vienna, 9 March 2010 – According to Statistics Austria, a total of 21 786 new passenger cars were registered in February 2010, representing an increase of 15.7% compared to February 2009. The loss of February 2009 (compared to 2008: -14.4%) could hence be compensated and February 2008 levels (21 987) were almost reached again.

Registrations of new petrol-driven cars (incl. flex-fuel (E85) vehicles; share: 50.4%) increased by +20.3%, those with diesel-drive (share: 49.2%) by +11.3%.

Among the TOP 10 brands of passenger cars, VW was on top with a market share of 16.4%. The following of the Top 10 brands could increase their registration figures in February 2010: Hyundai (+183.6%), Opel (+51.3%), Citroen (+47.6%), Renault (incl. Dacia; +34.4%), VW (+30.1%), Fiat (incl. Abarth; +22.6%), Peugeot (+11.0%), Skoda (+2.6%) and Ford (+1.4%). Only the brand Audi was on the decrease (-8.7%).

Comparing the TOP 10 models of passenger cars, models like Hyundai I 30 (+761.5%), VW Polo (+236.2%), Renault Mégane (+118.3%), Opel Meriva (+111.5%), Opel Astra (+75.1%), Renault Clio (+40.4%), Seat Ibiza (+15.6%) and VW Golf (+6.4%) realised positive results. Decreases were recorded for Skoda Octavia (-34.0%) and Audi A4 (-13.6%).

Methodical information, definitions:
The motor vehicle statistics (registrations of new and used vehicles as well as the stock of vehicles) is a secondary statistics which is compiled on the basis of daily data files sent to Statistics Austria by Austria’s association of insurance companies (VVO). The VVO in turn receives the data by the insurances’ registrations offices which are responsible for registrations, de-registrations and rectifications of motor vehicles and trailers.  
Within the statistics, all registrations of new vehicles, which means all brand new motor vehicles, are levied. In doing so, the duration of the registration is irrespective (short registrations, e.g. registrations valid for 1 day).  
Starting with January 2009 the total concerning new registrations of motor vehicles and passenger cars is adjusted according to the number of working days since the possible number of registrations highly depends on the number of working days.
