Fruit

Survey of commercial plantations

This survey, to be conducted every five years under the provisions of EU-regulation 1337/2011, provides comprehensive data on the area planted and the variety of fruit planted in certain fruit plantations as well as detailed information on the number and the age of trees and their regional density in Austria.

Survey on fruit plantations 2017

With reference date of 15 November 2017 Statistics Austria carried out the survey on fruit plantations based on the national Regulation BGBl. II Nr 247/2017.

Due to the results, 3 909 holdings cultivated fruits, which is 7% less compared to the previous comprehensive survey 2007. The total area reached 15 700 ha (+15% to 2007). Nearly half of the area (49%) was grown with apples, 16% were berries (incl. Aronia), 10% nuts, 9% elderberries, 6% apricots, 4% pears, 2% cherries (incl. sour cherries), 2% plums and 1% peaches (incl. nectarines).

While the area of apples with 7 700 ha decreased by 3% compared to the survey 2012 (where only apples, pears, apricots and peaches were included), apricots showed a significant increase by 17% to 1 000 ha. Pears also registered a surplus of 15% to 620 ha.

As the survey criteria 2017 have been partly changed considering the previous surveys (2007 and 2012) the comparability to them is limited.

2021 fruit harvest

A production of 188 200 tons of dessert fruits was achieved in 2021, as Statistics Austria reports. This was 14% below the ten years' average and 2% lower than the previous year's production.

Pome fruit brought a quantity of 159 900 tons (-5% compared to 2020) and decreased below the long-term average level (-15%). The production of stone fruit anew was very low and reached only 8 700 tons, which meant 28% below the ten years' average, though 55% over the previous year's production. The harvest of berries yielded 19 400 tons, which was 18% over the ten years' average and thus overruled the previous year's level by 4%. Apples, the main Austrian fruit species, achieved a harvest of 152 200 tons (-5% compared to 2020). Apricots, as strongly affected by spring frosts, achieved only a production of 4.400 tons (-26% to the ten years' average). Strawberries yielded 14 300 tons (+7% to 2020).
