Until 1988, data on the stock of agricultural and forestry equipment was collected at approximately six-yearly intervals in separate surveys. Since Austria's accession to the EU in 1995, only data on selected equipment (such as tractors, combine harvesters and harvesters) has been collected at irregular intervals as part of the Farm Structure Survey (1995, 1997, 1999, 2005, 2013).
Most recently, data on key agricultural and forestry
equipment was collected as part of the 2013 Farm Structure Survey. A total of 310 018 tractors were recorded on Austrian agricultural holdings,
corresponding to a slight decrease of 21 510 or 6.5% over the previous
survey in 2005. However, farmers once again invested in the purchase
of more powerful tractors. While stock in the size category below 40 kW
and in the size category of 40 to less than 60 kW decreased by 39 069
tractors
Clear decreases compared with 2005 were recorded in potato and turnip
harvesters
Since the purchase and maintenance of equipment is often unaffordable or unprofitable for the individual farmer, increasing use was made of the services offered by machinery rings. In addition, an increasing number of jointly purchased machines were used on agricultural and forestry holdings as a result of equipment cooperatives frequently being formed by several farmers joining together. Accordingly, in 2013, 50 355 agricultural and forestry holdings (30.3%) used at least one external tractor. 2005, 18.8% of the holdings used an external tractor.
