Vienna, 2021-04-20 – According to Statistics Austria, 2 908 passenger cars were deregistered after a registration period of one day in the first quarter of 2021. Compared to the same quarter last year, when 2 462 passenger cars were registered for one day, one-day registrations increased by 18.1%. The increase in one-day car registrations compared to the same quarter of the previous year is solely due to the growth in March 2021, in which an increase of 243.5% was recorded compared to the same month of the previous year. In January (-44.2%) and February (-33.8%) 2021, fewer cars were registered for one day than in the corresponding months of the previous year. Compared to the first quarter of 2019, when 3 488 passenger cars were registered for one day, 16.6% fewer passenger cars were registered for one day in the first quarter of 2021.

One-day registrations accounted for 4.6% of total new passenger car registrations in the period from January to March 2021 (Q1 2020: 4.5%; Q1 2019: 4.3%).

There was a 4.7% increase in new passenger car registrations with a registration period of up to seven days in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same period last year. Short-term registrations of up to 30 days and 60 days increased by 14.1% and 16.7%, respectively. There was also an increase in new passenger car registrations with a registration duration of up to 90 days (+16.9%) and up to 120 days (+16.4%).

Information on methods, definitions: Motor vehicle statistics (registrations of new and used vehicles as well as the stock of vehicles) are secondary statistics, compiled on the basis of daily data files sent to Statistics Austria by Austria’s association of insurance companies (VVO). VVO, in turn, receives data by the insurances’ registrations offices, responsible for registrations, de-registrations and rectifications of motor vehicles and trailers. The motor vehicle statistics, therefore, basically contains all registration data, regardless of the duration of the registration. 
A short-term registration is a new car registration that will be de-registered within a certain period. A new car registration with a registration period of up to seven days means that the car is de-registered after the first registration on the day of registration or within the following seven days. This applies accordingly to short-term registrations with a registration period of up to 30, 60, 90 and 120 days. Daily registered cars are registered and de-registered within 24 hours.  
In this context, the reporting month indicates the month in which de-registration was carried out. Only the first registration date and the de-registration date (=execution of de-registration done in insurances’ registrations offices) of a vehicle are crucial to be classified as "short-term registration".
