Passenger car one-day registrations increased by one fourth in 1st half of 2021; still well below 2019 level

Vienna, 2021-07-19 – According to Statistics Austria, 5 499 passenger cars were deregistered after a registration period of one day in the first half of 2021. Compared to the first six months of the previous year, when 4 431 passenger cars were registered for one day, registrations increased by 24.1%. In the first half of 2021 one-day registrations accounted for 4.1% of all new passenger car registrations (first half of 2020: 3.9%). Compared to the pre-crisis period in 2019, when 7 312 cars were registered for one day, the decrease amounted to 24.8%.

In the months January (-44.2%) and February (-33.8%) fewer passenger cars were registered and in March (+243.5%), April (+118.6%), May (+1.1%) and June (+31.2%) one-day registrations increased.

New car registrations with a registration period of up to seven days increased by 8.2% from January to June 2021, those with a registration period of up to 30 days increased by 27.4%. There were also more new passenger car registrations with a registration period of up to 60 days (+36.8%), up to 90 days (+38.1%) and up to 120 days (+30.8%).

Information on methods, definitions: Motor vehicle statistics (registrations of new and used vehicles as well as the stock of vehicles) are secondary statistics, compiled on the basis of daily data files sent to Statistics Austria by Austria’s association of insurance companies (VVO). VVO, in turn, receives data by the insurances’ registrations offices, responsible for registrations, de-registrations and rectifications of motor vehicles and trailers. The motor vehicle statistics, therefore, basically contains all registration data, regardless of the duration of the registration.  
A short-term registration is a new car registration that will be de-registered within a certain period. A new car registration with a registration period of up to seven days means that the car is de-registered after the first registration on the day of registration or within the following seven days. This applies accordingly to short-term registrations with a registration period of up to 30, 60, 90 and 120 days. Daily registered cars are registered and de-registered within 24 hours.   
In this context, the reporting month indicates the month in which de-registration was carried out. Only the first registration date and the de-registration date (=execution of de-registration done in insurances’ registrations offices) of a vehicle are crucial to be classified as "short-term registration".
