Vienna, 2021-12-10 – According to Statistics Austria, 222 155 passenger cars were newly registered from January to November 2021. This is 1.3% fewer than in the same period last year (2020: 224 968 passenger cars) and more than a quarter fewer new passenger car registrations than in the pre-Corona year (January to November 2019: 306 681 passenger cars; -27.6%). In 2020, a total of 248 740 new cars were registered. A similar figure is expected for the calendar year 2021, after the motor vehicle trade was closed on many days in December due to the pandemic both in the previous year and this year.

"At -27.6%, new car registrations since the beginning of 2021 have lagged far behind the pre-crisis period January to November 2019, with sales of diesel cars and petrol cars in particular slowing down significantly. The share of alternative drives in all new passenger car registrations, on the other hand, was 43.1% in November and thus significantly higher than that of internal combustion engines," said Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

New registrations of diesel-powered (53 847; share: 24.2%; -35.4%) and petrol-powered passenger cars (85 768; share: 38.6%; -13.7%) declined. In contrast, there were increases in passenger cars with alternative drive systems compared with the same period of the previous year. Passenger cars with electric drive (BEV) more than doubled (+138.1%) to 29 955 vehicles, passenger cars with petrol-hybrid drive increased by 80.1% to 40 110; passenger cars with diesel-hybrid drive recorded an increase of 76.7% to 12 382. Overall, alternative drive systems achieved a share of 37.2% in new passenger car registrations from January to November 2021, placing them just behind petrol passenger cars (share: 38.6%) and well ahead of diesel passenger cars (share: 24.2%).

VW (share: 15.3%), Skoda (share: 9.0%), Seat and BMW (both share: 6.5%) occupy the top places among the top-10 makes with the highest shares of all new passenger car registrations. Compared with the prior-year period, Audi (+17.3%), Fiat (+15.2%) and BMW (+1.5%) achieved increases. Declines were recorded for Renault (-16.2%), Hyundai (-8.9%), Skoda (-8.9%), Ford (-8.4%), Seat (-3.0%), VW (-2.8%) and Mercedes (-2.1%).

Related to new registrations from January to November 2021 the commercial vehicle market faced consistently increases. The strongest gains were recorded for class N1 lorries (+66.6%%), articulated lorries (+33.9%) and tractors used for agriculture and forestry (+31.2%). However, class N3 lorries (+7.1%) and class N2 lorries (+1.8%) also posted gains compared to January to November 2020.

More new registrations were also observed for motorcycles (+8.6%) but new registrations of scooters (-6.2%) declined compared with the prior-year period.

Overall, 347 884 new motor vehicles were registered during first eleven months of this year, 8.4% more than in the corresponding period last year. But this figure is still 14.9% below the new motor vehicle registrations in 2019.

November 2021: 12.6% fewer new passenger car registrations than in November 2020; one fifth all-electric passenger cars

A total of 22 744 new motor vehicle registrations were registered in November 2021, by 12.4% below the value of November 2020, while the number of newly registered passenger cars was 17 519, by 12.6% fewer than in November 2020. The share of all-electric passenger cars (BEV) reached 20.0% in November 2021. Overall, the share of alternatively powered passenger cars was 43.1%, well ahead of petrol-powered passenger cars (share: 32.4%) and diesel-powered passenger cars (share: 24.5%).

Information on methods, definitions: Motor vehicle statistics (registrations of new and used vehicles as well as the stock of vehicles) are secondary statistics, compiled on the basis of daily data files sent to Statistics Austria by Austria’s association of insurance companies (VVO). VVO, in turn, receives data by the insurances’ registrations offices, responsible for registrations, de-registrations and rectifications of motor vehicles and trailers. 
Within motor vehicle statistics, all motor vehicles, once nationally or internationally registered, are levied, irrespective of the registration’s duration.
