The European Statistical System (ESS) is the partnership between the Community statistical authority, which is the Commission (Eurostat), and the national statistical institutes (NSIs) and other national authorities responsible in each Member State for the development, production and dissemination of European statistics. Its objective is to provide comparable statistics at EU level. Member States collect data and compile statistics for national and EU purposes. The ESS functions as a network in which Eurostat’s role is to lead the way in the harmonization of statistics in close cooperation with the national statistical authorities.

The aim of “The ESS Report" (PDF, 8 MB) is to allow its readers an insider's view into the world of European statistics, produced and disseminated by the European Statistical System (ESS). The current issue takes a closer look at a number of topics such as energy, income consumption and wealth as well as managing an National Statistical Institute in these times. The report also features a number of interviews. Commissioner Marianne Thyssen notes her appreciation with the work of the ESS, the heads of Statistics Netherlands and the Slovak Republic look back at their presidencies, Austria presents DGINs and colleagues from Austria, Slovenia, Finland and Hungary outline their work at national level on the main topics of this edition.

Government expenditure in the EU – The interactive data visualisation tool "Government expenditure in the EU" allows you to view the government expenditure by function for European Union (28 countries).
A look at the lives of the elderly in the EU today – This is a new web tool based on the chapter "An ageing society — focus on the elderly" of the flagship publication “People in the EU: who are we and how do we live? The web tool contains several statistical indicators focusing on the elderly, such as life expectancy, place of birth, travelling and internet use.
Inflation Dashboard – A tool for graphical and dynamic data display of harmonised indices of consumer prices (HICP). It allows you to select countries and individual product groups and displays relevant data simultaneously in a map, a bar chart and two line charts.
Inflation Statistics Illustrated – The tool gives an overview of the price changes and weights of the main product groups included in the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) for the European Union and the euro area. The gradient of a rectangle indicates how much the prices have changed over a year. The rectangle's size is proportional to the share of the product group in the index.
Regional Statistics Illustrated – With this interactive tool, you can now visualise Eurostat's regional data. Regional Statistics Illustrated contains more than 50 indicators by NUTS 2 regions, grouped into 10 statistical domains.
EU2020 Statistics Illustrated – The Europe 2020 Statistics Illustrated is a group of tools that displays the crosscutting nature of the eight 2020 indicators in tabular form and a radar chart.
Country Profiles – This graphic tool enables you to compare countries and to group indicators according to the country and the region.
Statistical Atlas – With this interactive map viewer for statistical and topographical maps you can combine geographical information from various "base maps", such as the borders of the NUTS regions or the Urban Audit cities, with information from statistical maps.
