Fertility
Austrian women have an average of 1.44 children; fertility age now 31 years
83 603 children were born in Austria in 2020, which corresponds to a crude birth rate of 9.4 live births per 1 000 population. The total fertility rate was 1.44 children per woman in 2020, meaning that if age-specific fertility rates remain constant in the future, a 15-year old woman can statistically expect 1.44 live births before her 50th birthday. This average is therefore well below the “replacement level” of approx. 2 children per woman. Measured by the “net reproduction rate”, the generation currently at reproductive ages will numerically reproduce itself by 69 per cent.
The fact that the period fertility is so low in Austria is also due to the ever rising age at childbirth (“postponement” of births). In 2020 the mean fertility age was 31.0 years, i.e. 1.6 years higher than in 2007. Detailed studies show that the mean fertility age at the birth of the first child has risen particularly fast.
Mortality and life expectancy (incl. infant mortality)
Life expectancy 78.9 years for males and 83.7 years for females; infant mortality 3 per thousand
91 599 deaths were recorded in Austria in 2019, which
corresponds to a crude death rate of 10.3 deaths per 1 000 population. In 2020 the life expectancy
of an Austrian male at birth was 78.9 years, i.e. 0.6 years lower than in 2019.

The infant mortality rate – infant deaths per 1 000 live births – was 3.1 per thousand in Austria in 2019, and therefore after three years slightly over the 3-per-thousand mark. The total of infant deaths in the first week of life and stillbirths is called the number of “perinatal deaths”. In 2020 there counted were 5.1 perinatal deaths per 1 000 live births.
Marriages and divorces
First marriage age above 30 years, total divorce rate 37 percent
39 662 marriages were recorded in Austria in 2020, i.e. 4.4 marriages per 1 000 population. The median age of first marriage was 33.3 years for males (an increase of 1.7 years compared with the 2007 figure) and 30.0 years for females (an increase of 2.2 years since 2007).
When comparing marriage indicators over time, it is essential to understand that, since 2015, figures have included marriages abroad.
In 2020, 14 870 divorces were recorded in Austria. The total divorce rate was 36.9 per cent. This measure indicates the proportion of new marriages that will eventually be divorced if the currently observed duration-specific divorce rates will remain constant in the future. Some 4 out of 10 marriages will be ended by divorce, about 6 by the death of one of the two partners.
