Child and youth welfare

In 2020 a total of 38 489 children and adolescents received educational support while they remained in their families (“Unterstützung der Erziehung”), whereas 12 678 minors were in residential care or lived in foster families (“Volle Erziehung”). The percentage share of male minors was in both support services (“Unterstützung der Erziehung”: 54.3%; “Volle Erziehung”: 53.2%) higher than that of female minors. Viewed by the Laender, the highest percentage share of children and adolescents receiving educational support lived in Lower Austria (22.1%), whereas residential care/foster parents had the highest percentage share in Vienna (32.1%).

The total expenditure were €702.3 million in 2020, the receipts out of reimbursements by the persons obliged to provide maintenance amounted to €41.5 million (net expenditure: €660.8 million). Three quarters of the total expenditure fell upon residential care and foster parents.
