Time series and chain-linking
Time series
An index of wholesale prices has been calculated in Austria since 1914, and is available at the overall index level in a closed series from 1947 to the present.
The following wholesale price indices have been calculated and published over the years:
- Index of wholesale prices (base: Austrian schilling price March 1938=100), from October 1947 to December 1964
- Index of wholesale prices (base: 1964 =100 – up to 1972 inclusive turnover tax, from January 1973 exclusive VAT), from January 1965 to December 1976
- Index of wholesale prices (base: 1976 =100; exclusive VAT), from January 1977 to December 1986
- Index of wholesale prices (base: 1986 =100; exclusive VAT), from January 1987 to December 1996
- Index of wholesale prices (base: 1996 =100; exclusive VAT), from January 1997 to December 2000
- Index of wholesale prices (base: 2000 =100; exclusive VAT), from January 2001 to December 2005
- Index of wholesale prices (base: 2005 =100; exclusive VAT), from January 2006 to December 2010
- Index of wholesale prices (base: 2010 =100; exclusive VAT), from January 2011 to date
Chain-linking
For longer-term price comparisons, it is possible to continue older index series using price trends from subsequent index series, in other words to chain-link them. However, as a result of repeated changes to the classification system of the wholesale price index over a number of decades, direct comparability of all the detailed indices is limited (see Chain factors, PDF only German).
