In the 2010/11 winter semester, 274 836 Austrians were studying at tertiary educational institutions
(no doublecounts). A total of 216 959 Austrian students were enrolled
at public universities, of whom 205 972 were pursuing regular courses
of study. The 13 private universities had 4 113 Austrian students. 32
819 students with Austrian citizenship were studying at a Fachhochschule.
10 590 Austrians were enrolled at universities of education and 109
domestic students were enrolled at four schools of theology. 4 482 domestic
students were undertaking other university-level programmes.
75 411 foreign students were (also) studying in Austria in
the 2010/11 winter semester. At public universities 22% of the all regular
students were foreign students. 35% of students at private universities
were not Austrian citizens. The proportion of foreign students undertaking
Fachhochschule programmes, a type of study that focuses specifically
on Austrian interests, was just 13%. At universities of education the
proportion of foreign students was just 7%. At the schools of theology
a remarkable proportion of 54% foreign students was registered and 10%
of those undertaking other university-level programmes were foreign
students. The majority of foreign students – almost 90% – come from
Europe, of whom three quarters are EU citizens.
In the 2010/11 winter semester, the proportion of women among regular domestic students at the
public universities was 53%. The number of women as a proportion of
the total number of Austrian students at private universities is 61%.
Female students continue to be underrepresented in the Fachhochschule
sector, with a proportion of 46%. At universities of education 77% of
students are female. 28% of students at the schools of theology are
female as are 41% of students undertaking a university level degree
programme. The most popular courses of study at the public universities are
law, business management and medicine. Private universities focus on
artistic and scientific studies, social sciences, economics and health
studies. Fachhochschule study programs focus on business and technology.
However, most of the other university-level programs have an economic
focus.
