Cancer incidences

Around 38 000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year in Austria, with men being affected slightly more frequently than women. After cardiovascular diseases, malignant cancer is the second most common cause of death in both sexes. In view of the fact that these diseases occur primarily in older people, the importance of cancer incidences for describing health status and planning health care will continue to increase in future due to the increasing age of the population.

The epidemiology of cancer incidence (newly diagnosed cases per calendar year, data source: Austrian cancer registry) and cancer mortality (data source: Austrian cause of death statistics) plays a key role in health reporting. Data from the cancer registry and from cause of death statistics is also of major importance in the evaluation of screening programmes.

The 1969 Cancer Statistics Act and the 1978 Cancer Statistics Ordinance provide the statutory basis for the Austrian cancer registry.

To ensure that incidence and mortality data is as up-to-date and easily accessible as possible, all cancer incidences for which standard evaluations are available are listed in the navigation area on the left hand side. This data includes charts showing the development over time, time series tables, and tables showing regional and stage distribution.
