In 2007, a total of 64 556 actually set-up beds were
available at the 270 hospitals throughout Austria, i.e. 776 beds per
100 000 inhabitants. The number of beds has been cut gradually since
the 1980s, with beds since reduced by 23.2%.
About 90% of planned beds were in general hospitals
and in specialist hospitals and convalescent homes (64.8% and 24.5%
respectively), 7.3% in sanatoriums, and 3.4% in nursing homes for the
chronically ill.
