Figures

On the survey date 31 December 2011, the 12 038 enterprises (+2.1% against the previous year) comprising industry and construction (Sections B to F of ÖNACE 2008) counted 762 921 persons employed (+2.9%). Of these, exactly 760 162 people (+2.9%) were employees (white collar workers, blue collar workers, apprentices and outworkers) for whom gross earnings (including gross special payments and gross redundancy payments) of €30.3 bn (+4.4%) were disbursed. In the 2011 year under review, the enterprises in the industry and construction sector achieved turnover of €235.9 bn. Of this amount, more than half (52.1% or €122.9 bn) was domestic turnover.

At the end of 2011, exactly 6 473 enterprises (+1.1% against the previous year) were counted in industry (Sections B to E of ÖNACE 2003), and they recorded a turnover of €205.7 bn (+13.1%).

The 5 565 enterprises (+3.2% against the previous year) in the construction sector (Section F of ÖNACE 2008) counted a total of 182 585 employees (+3.8%), who generated a total turnover of €30.1 bn (+4.9%).

In line with the EU-harmonised concept, the enterprise is the principal survey unit and is used to present data concerning turnover and employed persons in particular. For certain other characteristics (e.g. production output, volume of work) and for the purposes of regionalised analysis, the establishment is also used as the unit of observation. The monthly short term statistics in industry and construction, which were introduced in 1996, constitute the basis for satisfying the EU Regulation concerning short term statistics on the one hand, and on the other are used to determine the national production of goods as per the EU Regulation on the establishment of a Community survey of industrial production. They thus serve as one of the main sources of information for assessing the economic development of Austria and the overall European economic and monetary area.

The accumulated annual results for the last three years can be found under “Table(s)”.

The highest turnover was realised in the ÖNACE divisions 35 (Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply) with €39.1 bn, followed by the divisions 28 (Manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c.) with €18.2 bn, 24 (Manufacture of basic metals) with €16.7 bn, 43 (Specialised construction activities) with €14.1 bn, 10 (Manufacture of food products) with €14.0 bn, 29 (Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers) with €13.3 bn, 25 (Manufacture of fabricated metals products, except machinery and equipment) with €12.9 bn, 27 (Manufacture of electrical equipment) with €11.8 bn and 19 (Manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products) with €10.2 bn. These nine economic branches accounted almost two third (150.2 bn or 63.7%) of all turnover generated by the entire industry and construction sector.

The sectors with the highest turnover generally also counted the most employees. ÖNACE division 43 (Specialised construction activities) employed the highest number of people, at 102 016. It was followed by divisions 28 (Manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c., 69 004), 25 (Manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment, 62 580) and 10 (Manufacture of food products, 54 363).

The sectors with the greatest increase in turnover (+38.1% and +28.3%) were ÖNACE divisions 32 (Other manufacturing) and 19 (Manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products). The greatest decreases in turnover occurred in ÖNACE division “Manufacture of wearing apparel” (-17.5%), followed by the division “Printing and reproduction of recorded media” (-7.4%).
