The usage of information and communication technologies has become increasingly important for enterprises. The results of a survey conducted by STATISTICS AUSTRIA for the ninth time show that in January 2009, 98% of Austrian enterprises with at least 10 persons employed used the Internet. More than 3,650 enterprises with at least 10 persons employed took part in the survey. The survey was conducted in the economic sectors (ÖNACE 2008) of manufacturing, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities, construction, wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, transportation and storage, accommodation and food service activities, information and communication, financial and insurance activities, real estate activities, professional, scientific and technical activities (excluding veterinary activities) and administrative and support service activities. As the survey was commissioned by the Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat) and all EU member states are required by Regulation to take part, a high comparability of the data within the EU-countries is guaranteed. Results on European level are expected for January 2010.
An own website plays an important role for enterprises. In January 2009, 80% of all enterprises presented their company or their products or services via an own website. Also small enterprises (10 to 49 employed persons) used a website for presentation frequently (78%). For doing business with business partners online or via data transmission more easily, a fast connection for the Internet access is needed. 76% of the enterprises therefore used broadband connections (DSL connections or other broadband connections, e.g. cable, leased line, glass fibre), while dial-up connections (analogue modems or ISDN connections) were used by 39% of the enterprises. An increasing number of enterprises used mobile connections, e.g. via mobile phones, to connect to the Internet (38%).
To simplify the contact with public authorities a wide range of information and services are offered electronically via the Internet (e-Government); 77% of the enterprises used such services online.
