ICT usage in enterprises in 2011

The usage of information and communication technologies (ICT) has become increasingly important for enterprises. In January 2011, 98% of Austrian enterprises with at least 10 persons employed used the Internet, 83% of the enterprises had a website. Having a website still depends on the size of an enterprise. Whereas nearly all large enterprises (250 and more persons employed, 98%) have a website, 94% of medium-sized enterprises (50 to 249 persons employed) and 80% of small enterprises (10 to 49 persons employed) presented their company or their products or services via a website.

These are the results of a survey conducted by STATISTICS AUSTRIA for the eleventh time. More than 3 000 enterprises with at least 10 persons employed took part in the survey. The survey was implemented in the economic sectors (ÖNACE 2008, corresponding to NACE rev. 2) of manufacturing, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities, construction, wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, transportation and storage, accommodation and food service activities, information and communication, real estate activities, professional, scientific and technical activities (excluding veterinary activities), administrative and support service activities as well as repair of computers and communication equipment. As EU member states are required to deliver data to this topic by a Regulation and a standardized questionnaire is used, a high comparability of the data within the EU-countries is guaranteed. Results on European level are expected for January 2012.

More and more enterprises use high speed Internet connections for accessing the Internet. 89% of enterprises have already used broadband connections (DSL, other fixed broadband connections (e.g. cable, leased line), mobile broadband connections via portable computer using modem with at least 3G-technology as well as mobile broadband connections via handset with at least 3G-technology), while connections via an analogue modem or via ISDN are only used in 28% of the enterprises.

Interacting with public authorities is also often done via the Internet (e-Government). 93% of enterprises were using e-Government in 2010 (e.g. for information search, obtaining forms, returning filled in forms or treating an administrative procedure completely electronically).

Purchases via e-Commerce (via a website, e.g. via an online-shop, via EDI-type systems or via other means of electronic data transmission, e.g. XML, EDI, excluding manually typed e-Mails) were done by 59% of all enterprises (about 20,800 enterprises). More of the large enterprises handle purchases via e-Commerce than smaller enterprises do. 77% of the large, 67% of the medium-sized and 57% of the small enterprises made purchases via e-Commerce.
