More and more Austrian households have access to the Internet at home. 75% of households were equipped with an Internet access in 2011. To access the Internet households strongly used broadband connections. 72% of all households were equipped with broadband connections. 57% used fixed broadband connections (e.g. DSL, cable, fibre, satellite, public WiFi or WLAN) while 32% made use of mobile broadband (e.g. via portable computer with modem or via mobile phone with at least 3G-Technology, e.g. UMTS, HSDPA).
These data are the results of a survey conducted by STATISTICS AUSTRIA for the tenth time. Approximately answers from 3 500 households with at least one household member aged 16 to 74 and approximately 4 900 persons aged 16 to 74 could be used for grossing up. As EU member states are required to deliver data to that topic by a Regulation and a standardized questionnaire is used, a high comparability of the data within the EU-countries is guaranteed. European results for 2011 are expected by the end of 2011.
During the three months prior to the survey, 79% of persons aged 16 to 74 used the Internet. One of the most popular purposes to use the Internet is searching for information. 67% of persons aged between 16 and 74 years were looking for health-related information. 68% stated to use Wikis (e.g. Wikipedia, an online encyclopaedia). The Internet is also used for communication activities. 45% of the internet users are participating in social networks, e.g. Facebook, Twitter or My Space. Telephoning over the Internet is getting more and more popular. In 2006 the portion of persons who used the internet for this purposes was 12%, in 2011 the portion increased up to 29%.
Internet shopping is increasing onwards. 45% of persons aged 16 to 74 indicated that they purchased goods or services over the Internet during the twelve months prior to the survey. The most popular product groups for Internet-shoppers were "clothing and sports articles", "holiday accommodation and other travel arrangements", "books, e-books, magazines, newspapers and e-learning materials", as well as "tickets for events" and "electronic equipment (including cameras)".
