Working time

In the third quarter of 2011, 3 157 800 employed persons worked full-time and 1 042 400 were part-time workers, according to the Labour Force Survey (LFS) using ILO definitions and information provided in response to the question about part-time or full-time employment. Compared with the third quarter of 2010, the total number of employed persons increased by 52 800. This is mainly due to the increase of full-time employment in the third quarter of 2011 in a year to year comparison by 40 900. For employees the number of full-time jobs increased by 43 700, part-time jobs rose by 12 300 in absolute figures. The part-time rate among employees was in the third quarter of 2011 with 24.6% as high as it was in the third quarter of 2010. In the third quarter of 2011 895 800 employees worked part-time, thereof 755 800 women.

The volume of work (number of hours actually worked in main and second job) amounted to 1 billion 724 million working hours in the third quarter of 2011, 87 million hours less than in the second quarter of 2011 and 7 million hours more than in the third quarter of 2010. The average number of actual hours worked per week in the main job in the third quarter of 2011 was 31.5 hours, 0.4 hours less than in the third quarter of 2010 (32.0 hours). The normal hours worked per week was – with 38 hours – 0.2 hours below the third quarter of 2010. Among employees the volume of work increased by 2.4 million hours in the third quarter of 2011 compared to the third quarter of 2010. The average number of actual hours worked per week decreased by 0.5 hours within one year to 30.0 hours per week.

With respect to the 2010 annual average, the number of full-time jobs decreased by 8 700 compared to the previous year, part-time increased by 27 500 to 1 030 400. The overall part-time rate rose from 24.6% in the average of 2009 to 25.2% 2010. Likewise the part-time rate for employees rose from 24.5% 2009 to 25.0% 2010. 882 100 employees were working part-time.

The 2010 annual average for the normal hours worked per week for all employed persons was 37.9 hours, corresponding to a fall of 0.3 hours compared with 2009. The average normal hours worked per week also fell for employees, from 37.0 hours 2009 to 36.9 hours 2010.

The actual hours worked per week among employees stayed at the same level than in the year befor with 31.6 hours 2010. As regards all employed persons, the actual hours worked per week decreased by 0.1 hours to 32.8 hours per week.

The 2010 annual figure for the volume of work (actual hours worked) in main jobs was 6 billion 875 million hours. Including the hours worked in second jobs, a total of 6 billion 977 million hours were worked. The volume of work by employees amounted to 5 billion 699 million hours (2009: 5 698 billion hours). Thus the volume of work among all persons employed as well as among employees stayed at the same level within the last year.

Note: According to the ILO definition (Labour Force Concept), employed persons are those who worked at least one hour in the reference week or who did not work owing to holiday leave, illness etc. but who otherwise normally pursue a job. The figures relating to part-time employment cited in the text include persons on parental leave, for whom the most recent working time was recorded. These figures are not, however, included in the data on average hours worked and on the volume of work.
