Long-term trend and current final annual results

In the 1980s and 1990s, the number of live births averaged 90 000 a year, with figures peaking in 1982 (94 840) and 1992 (95 302). This was followed in 2001 by the lowest number of births ever recorded in Austria (75 458), and no uniform trend has been discernible in the years that followed. The increase in 2002 (78 399) was succeeded by a decline to 76 944 (2003); 2004 saw a renewed increase to 78 968, whereas in 2005 (78 190) as well as in 2006 (77 914) the number of births decreased. This decline continued in 2007, by 1 664, with a total of 76 250 babies born. In 2008 numbers increased again by 2.0 % to 77 752 live births. In 2009 numbers decreased by 1.8% to 76 344 live births and increased again in 2010 by 3.1% to 78 742. 40.1% of all live births were born out of wedlock (2009: 39.3%).

The balance of births and deaths was positive by +1 543 people.

Mean age at childbearing was 30.1 years (all births) resp. 28.5 years (first births) in 2010, compared with an average of 26.4 years (all births) resp. 24.3 years (first births) in the 1980s.
