Population forecasts

STATISTICS AUSTRIA regularly prepares population forecasts for Austria and the Länder (federal provinces). On the basis of assumptions about future trends in births, deaths and migration, the number and structure of the population are extrapolated into the future. In order to account for uncertainties in future trends, the forecast is calculated in several variants concerning future trends in fertility, mortality and migration.

Secondary forecasts (economically active persons, households and families)

Based on the population forecasts, further projections are calculated by projecting subgroups of the population using age-specific and gender-specific proportions. In this way, future trends are regularly forecast for economically active persons (using activity rates), households (using rates for household representatives) and families (using family member rates).
