Long-term trend and current final annual results

In the 1980s and 1990s, the number of marriages averaged 45 000 per annum. Following the post-war low recorded in 2001 (34 213), a slight upward trend began in the following years but ended in 2006 with a significant decline in the number of marriages (-5.7% to 36 923). In 2007 the number of marriages decreased by a further 2.5% to 35 996. In 2008 this downward trend continued with a decrease of 2.1% to 35 223. In 2009 the number of marriages slightly increased to 35 469. In 2010 the upward trend was confirmed by a strong increase of 5.9% to 37 545 marriages.

The average age for first-time marriages (median age) rose from 24.3 to 29.3 for women and from 26.5 to 31.9 for men between the early 1990s and 2010.
