Crimes recorded by the police

A total of 572 695 criminal offences were recorded by the police in Austria in 2008, 3.6% less on the previous year's figure of 594 240. At -6.3%, the number of solved cases decreased to a much greater extent in a year-on-year comparison (from 234 312 to 219 514). The clear-up rate (number of solved cases as a percentage of the total number of cases recorded) thus dropped by 1.1 percentage points from 39.4% (2007) to 38.3% (2008).

In parallel to the total number of criminal offences recorded by the police, the number of suspects identified also decreased throughout Austria. Between 2007 and 2008 the number dropped by 2.6% from 247 021 to 240 554. The number of juvenile suspects aged from 14 to less than 18 increased by 8.6%, while the number of foreign suspects declined by 5.3%.

In comparison with the 1990s, the number of cases recorded by the police is currently much higher while the number of cases solved is lower. The clear-up rate in 1996 was still 51.1%, i.e. more than half of all cases recorded. There has also been a significant increase in the number of juvenile and foreign suspects.
