3.90 million Employees (excluding apprentices) earned €24 516 in 2009. The median gross annual income for women was €18 270, men earned €30 316 on average. The median net annual income 2010 was €18 366 (women: €14 768, men: €21 786).
An interpretation of the differences in income between men and women needs to take structural differences into account. These include in particular disproportionately high rates of part-time employment and employment for only part of the year as well as different qualification and age structures.
In 2010, around 2.00 million pensioners were resident in Austria. They received a median gross annual income of €17 284 (women: €13 162, men: €22 860). This equated to a median net income of €15 638 (women: €12 458, men: €19 162).
Male civil servants (€49 983) head the list of the groups of employed persons, followed by female civil servants (€46 726) and male white collar workers (€40 401). Civil servants under contract and male blue collar workers are in the middle of the range (between €33 393 and €23 891), while female white collar workers (€20 292) and female blue collar workers (€10 492) bring up the rear.
