overnight stays in calendar year 2011
In calendar year 2011 (final results), a total of 126.0 million overnight stays were reported; this equates a
rise of 0.9% compared to 2010. The increase was observed in the number
of domestic overnight stays, which reached a new record high (+0.8%;
35.3 million), as well as in the number of overnight stays by guests
from abroad (+0.9%; 90.7 million).
There was a significant increase of 3.7% (34.6 million)
in the number of guests (= arrivals), with a rise of 2.0% (11.6 million)
among Austrian residents and an increase of 4.6% (23.0 million) among
guests from abroad. The average length of stay (3.6 nights) was 0.1 percentage points
lower than in the previous year.
A drop in overnight stays by visitors from Germany
and the Netherlands (the countries of origin with the most overnight stays) was observed:
Germany registered a decrease of 1.6% (47.4 million) compared to the
previous year; the Netherlands suffered losses (-1.9%; 8.9 million) as
well. Declines were also recorded in other important origin countries:
Great Britain (-4.6%), Italy (-0.2%), Denmark (-3.3%), USA (-3.2%) and Sweden
(-1.1%). This was, however, compensated by guests from Switzerland (+12.6%),
France (+2.7%) and Belgium (+4.1%). Above-average increase was observed
in the number of overnight stays by guests from countries of the Central
and Eastern Europe region, whereas guests from Russia (+25.6%), Czech
Republic (+5.4%), Poland (+6.7%), Hungary (+5.8%) and Romania (+3.7%)
spend their night significantly more often than the year before.
Overnight stays in hotels and similar establishments
showed a positive trend: 5-/4-star establishments achieved the highest
relative growth (+1.8%); hotels in the 3-star category attained a growth
of 1.2%. According to a longtime trend, overnight stays in 2-/1-star establishments
(-1.5%) and private accommodations (-3.9%) declined further. Overnight
stays in private holiday dwellings remained to a large extend unchanged
(-0.1%). Due to a general positive trend in overnight stays in 2011,
almost every federal province – apart from Tyrol (-0.2%) and Vorarlberg
(-2.4%) – closed with a positive result; Vienna showed the largest
increase with 5.0%.
In the winter season 2010/2011 62.1 million overnight stays were registered.
This represents a decrease of 1.0% compared to the winter season 2009/2010.
The negative trend is due to a decline of overnight stays by non-residents
(47.2 million;-1.3%); with 14.9 million overnight stays by residents the
record from 2009/2010 was missed by only 13.000 overnight stays. Crucial
for the slight decline in overnight stays (-1.3%) was the decrease in
overnight stays from Germany, which fell by 5.7% to 23.5 million. The
number of overnight stays by guests from the Netherlands (-0.6%) and
the United Kingdom (-2.6%) also dropped. Guests from the Switzerland
and the USA spent more nights than in the previous year (+12.6% or 13.0%).
Overnight stays in hotels in the 5-/4-star category increased by 0.9%,
while overnight stays in 3-star or 2-/1-star establishments decreased by
0.5% or 4.3%.
In the summer season 2011, a total of 64.0 million overnight stays
were reported, 2.4% more than in summer 2010. The positive trend is
mainly due to an increase of overnight stays by non-residents (43.7 million,
+3.2%). The number of guests from Germany (country of origin with the
most overnight stays) increased by 2.6% to 24.0 million, arrivals from
guests of the Netherlands (second most origin country) dropped slightly
(-1.4%). Switzerland (+10.8%) and countries from Central resp. Eastern
Europe (Czech Republic: +12.8%; Hungary: +18.5%; Russia: +30.6%, Poland:
+25.8%; Romania: +4.2%) closed with a positive result. The number of
nights spent by Austrian residents remained high (20.3 million, +0.8%).
Overnight stays in hotels in the 3- and 5-/4-star-category increased by
2.8% resp. 2.2%. The number of guests in private accommodations decreased
slightly (-1.7%); arrivals in private holiday dwellings increased by
2.4%.
