A tourism satellite account for Austria

In 2009 the direct value creation (value added) effect from tourism was €14.89 billion, corresponding to 5.4% of total value added (GDP).

Of the total spending in 2009 on vacation and business trips as well as visits to friends and relatives of €28.96 billion, 51.6% was spent by non-resident visitors, 48.0% by resident travelers. Total spending by tourists staying in their weekend houses or second homes amounted to 0.4%. An increase in total spending of 2.0% to €29.53 billion is expected in 2010.

Tourism created €14.89 billion in direct value added, corresponding to 5.4% of GDP.

The national economic importance of tourism and its contribution to total national value added is a key indicator for economic politics. In order to depict this key indicator, the TSA results need to be presented taking into account all direct and indirect effects from tourism but excluding business trips. The application of current input-output multipliers on the corrected TSA results to estimate the indirect effects showed direct and indirect value creation of €20.85 billion in 2009. This means that the direct and indirect contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 7.6%. In 2010 and 2011 a slight decrease is expected (7.5%, 7.3%).

When determining the national economic importance of the tourism and leisure industry, the non-tourism leisure consumption by Austrian residents at their place of residence also needs to be taken into account. According to the latest calculations, this was €26.77 billion in 2009. After applying input-output multipliers, this showed direct and indirect value added creation of €20.90 billion. The contribution of leisure consumption to GDP was therefore 7.6%. In 2010 this value is expected to remain largely unchanged, in 2011 a slight decrease to 7.5% is expected.

Taking an overall view of effective domestic spending on non-tourism leisure consumption at people's place of residence as well as tourist consumption, the considerable size of the overall tourism and leisure industry becomes clear:

  • The direct and indirect value added recorded for 2009 was €41.75 billion (-1.1% compared with the previous year).
  • The contribution of the overall tourism and leisure industry to GDP was 15.2% in 2009 (+0.31 percentage points compared to the previous year).
  • In 2010 the importance of the sector in terms of overall GDP is estimated to be on the same level as in 2009 (-0.1 percentage points compared to 2009), in 2011 a decrease to 14.8% is expected.
