Detailed results for trade and services

The 238 432 enterprises and their 1 730 233 employees operating in the services sector achieved a turnover of €391.3 bn in the year under review 2009, generating a production value of €179.2 bn and a gross value added at factor costs of €98.9 bn. Personnel expenditure for the 1 511 437 employees amounted to €57.1 bn, and the investment volume totalled €24.4 bn.

Compared to results of the year 2008 number of enterprises, persons employed and turnover have shown a downward movement due to the economic crisis. Measured in terms of turnover “Financial and insurance activities” (-26.8%), “Employment activities”  (-19.0%), “Air transport” (-16.6%) and “Wholesale trade”  (-13.9%) were mostly affected by the economic crisis. In contrast, “Real estate activities”, “Legal and accounting activities”  and “Computer services” achieved turnover increases. Decreasing turnover resulted in a reduction of investments by 17.2% compared to the year before.

A comparison of the key data for the industries and construction sector and the results of the services sector shows just how clearly the services sector predominates. 80.1% of enterprises operated in the services sector. With 65.0% of persons employed, they earned a 64.3% share of turnover and a 61.0% share of the gross value added at factor costs. Just under three quarters (71.1%) of total investment were also made in the services sectors. The reasons are rather high investment of enterprises engaged in leasing and infrastructure investments.

The percentage distribution of enterprises within the services sector by ÖNACE 2008 sections (see chart “Percentage distribution of enterprises, persons employed, turnover and investments 2009 in the service sectors by sections of ÖNACE 2008”) shows that, measured against the number of enterprises, the section “Trade” came top with 30.6% of enterprises, 35.4% of persons employed, and 51.5% of turnover. Measured against the number of enterprises (23.5%), the section “Professional, scientific and technical activities” came second, even though it recorded only 11.7% of persons employed. “Financial and insurances activities” earned 16.8% of the turnover with only 2.9% of enterprises and 7.3% of persons employed. By contrast, “Accommodation and food service activities”, with 18.5% of enterprises and 15.0% of persons employed, accounted for only 3.7% of the turnover of the services sector as a whole.

The results by size classes of persons employed (see chart “Enterprises, persons employed, turnover, and gross value added at factor costs in the service sectors 2009 by size classes of persons employed”) reflect the structure of the Austrian economy, which is predominantly characterised by small businesses. For the reporting year 2009, it emerged that 213 494 enterprises (89.5%) operated with less than ten employed persons. The enterprises in this size class of persons employed achieved a turnover of €82.0 bn with 517 350 employees. This resulted in a gross value added at factor costs of €23.1 bn, which corresponds to a value added ratio of 23.4%. By contrast, only 515 enterprises (0.2%) had 250 or more persons employed. However, these enterprises employed with 528 221 less than one third (30.5%) of all persons employed. These enterprises accounted for 32.1% of the turnover, 35.2% of the gross value added at factor costs, and 33.4% of investment.

The results by turnover size classes painted a similar picture in terms of structure as those for the size classes of persons employed. During the year under review 2009, 209 785 enterprises (88.0%) achieved a turnover of less than €1 m. The value of the gross value added at factor costs in this size group was €15.5 bn (15.7%). The 902 enterprises (0.4%) that achieved a turnover of €50 m or more in the year under review generated more than half the entire turnover (€221.5 bn or 56.6%) with 28.2% of all persons employed. This turnover size group achieved a share of the gross value added at factor costs of 43.2%.

Remark:

Regulation (EC) No. 295/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 March 2008 concerning structural business statistics (recast) is the legal basis for compiling structural business statistics on European level by a new classification of economic activities (NACE Rev. 2) from the reference year 2008 onwards.

The Regulation for structural business statistics is the basis for the collection of structural business statistics data on all market activities in the service sectors, as covered by Sections G to N and division 95 of ÖNACE 2008 beginning with the reference year 2008.

Because of an enlargement of coverage of economic activities and movements of economic activities comparability with data published from for reference years 2003 to 2007 by classification of economic activities ÖNACE 2003 is only limited. Additionally some methodological and conceptual adjustments were carried out. Further information regarding the changes as well as a conversions matrix, which will allow a conversion of the results from ÖNACE 2008 to ÖNACE 2003 for main variables is available.

Sector-specific results and further background information on the methodology can be found in the detailed results for Production, Construction and Trade, Services.
