Inland waterway transport
Inland waterway transport is widely regarded as an eco-friendly mode of transporting especially large volumes of freight. The inland waterway survey covers the transport performance of domestic and foreign vessels transporting freight on the Danube waterway, which links Austria with the European waterway network. Detailed statistical data is available to all interested parties and decision makers covering in particular the number of laden ships, the transport volume and the transport performance, itemised according to domestic and foreign ships as well as by types of transport (inland transport, international goods receipt and dispatch, transit).
Results
A total of 11 052 080 tons (t) of freight was transported
in freight transport
on the Austrian section of the Danube in the survey year 2010, which
is an increase of 1 730 270 t
The international goods receipt ascended by remarkable 25.4% to 6 199 870 t compared to the previous year. International goods dispatch showed an increase in transport volume of 5.5% to 1 667 805 t. The tonnage in inland transport increased by 38.6% to 456 632 t (including 29.834 t excavated gravel in the Danube basin). For transit an increase of 10.6% to 2 727 772 t was determined.
Waterside trans-shipments by all ports on the Austrian section
of the Danube increased by 22.2% to 8 780 940 t in 2010. Thereof
The ports of Linz handled 5 202 853 t which was a rise by 25.1%. The result of the ports of Vienna grew by 11.6% to 1 137 789 t, in the port of Krems the waterside trans-shipments augmented by 35.2% to 350 218 t and in the port of Enns by 25.4% to 666 951 t. For the remaining ports there was a result of 1 393 295 t ascertained for the reference year which is a growth by 14.6% compared to the previous year.
On the Austrian part of the Danube there were counted 19 accidents involving freight vessels during the reference year 2010.
