Rail freight transport
In rail freight transport, a total of 107.7 million tonnes of freight was transported on Austria’s railway network in 2010 by all domestic and foreign railway operating companies. The breakdown by modes of transport was as follows: inland transport, 37.4 million tonnes; international goods receipt, 31.1 million tonnes; international goods dispatch, 18.5 million tons and transit, 20.5 million tons.
The transport performance (i.e. the product of transport volume and distance) on Austrian territory totalled 19.8 billion tonne-kilometres (tkm), with inland transport accounting for 5.8 billion tkm; international goods receipt for 5.5 billion tkm; international goods dispatch for 4.1 billion tkm; and transit for 4.4 billion tkm.
In 2010 the operating performance of the freight train was with 51.5 million train-kilometres 11.9% higher than in the year before.
