Registrations of new vehicles 2011

In 2011 the total number of registrations of new vehicles (without trailers) amounted to 457 485 which meant an increase of 7.9% compared to 2010. The number of new passenger cars increased by 8.4% to 356 145 vehicles (2010: 328 563 units), the highest value ever reported. For commercial vehicles, increases were observed as well; a plus of 16.3% was denoted for lorries (36 123 units), the most important vehicle type among the commercial vehicles. The market for two-wheelers showed an overall negative development of -1.2% which is particularly due to the considerable decreases of motorcycles (-8.2%) and scooters (-6.8%).

Considering the engine output, more powerful cars remained most popular in 2011; the share of those in the class of 68 to 89 kW (91-119 bhp) amounted to 34.6%; accordingly, this segment showed an increase (+14.9%), those above 89 kW (119 bph) as well (share: +32.1%+19.8%). However, passenger cars with less capacity reported decreases: 56 to 67 kW (75-90 bhp) -4.1%, 41 to 55 kW (55-74 bhp) -4.1%, 27 to 40 kW (36-54 bhp) -74.2% and 16 to 26 kW (22-35 bhp) -10.1%.

Among the ten most popular makes in 2011, Volkswagen (VW) again defended the top position with 65 150 registered new passenger cars (share: 18.3%), followed by Opel with 25 919 vehicles (share: 7.3%), Renault (incl. Dacia; share: 6.8%), Ford (share: 6.6%), Skoda (share: 5.7%), Audi (share: 5.6%), BMW (incl. MINI; share: 5.1%), Hyundai (share: 5.1%), Seat (share: 4.6%) and Peugeot (share: 4.5%). Compared to 2010, the makes Ford (+19.4%), VW (+18.4%), BMW (incl. MINI; +16.6%), Seat (+16.1%), Hyundai (+15.1%), Audi (+11.6%), Renault (incl. Dacia; +10.6%), Skoda (+8.9%) and Peugeot (+5.1%) among the TOP 10 documented increases while Opel (-1.6%) decreased.

Average CO2-emissions of newly registered passenger cars 2000 to 2011

On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment & Water Management as well as the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund and in accordance with the regulation (EC) No 443/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 April 2009 setting emission performance standards for new passenger cars, Statistics Austria evaluates the CO2-emissions of new registrated passenger cars compiled on basic data transferred by Austria’s association of insurance companies (VVO).  

Provisional results 2011 showed that the average CO2-emissions of petrol and diesel driven passenger cars amounted to 138 g/km and 140 g/km. An analysis of the results since 2000 have been showing a trend to reduced-emission vehicles; in 2000 the above mentioned engine types averagely recorded 176 and 162 g/km, respectively.
