Road traffic accidents 2011: 523 people killed; lowest number of accidents, people injured and killed since 1961; more drink-drive fatalities

In 2011, the number of Austrian road traffic accidents with personal injury fell by 0.6% to 35 129 compared to 2010. The number of people injured decreased by 1.8% to 45 025. A total of 523 road users were killed in accidents, 29 less than in 2010 (-5.3%). These three figures reported by Statistics Austria are the lowest since the beginning of standardised road accident statistics in 1961. The number of road accidents averaged 96 per day, 125 people were injured or killed.

The number of drink-drive accidents also declined slightly by 0.7%, while by contrast the number of people killed in drink-drive accidents increased by 54.5% (from 33 to 51). In 2011, every tenth person killed in a road accident fell victim of a drink-drive accident (in 2010 every seventeenth).
