Stock of motor vehicles and trailers

Stock 2011

Considering the reference day 31 December 2011, a total of 6.20 million motor vehicles, including 4.51 million passenger cars, 436 315 tractors used for agriculture and forestry, 390 704 lorries and 409 675 motorcycles (incl. lightweight motorcycles) were registered in Austria, by 1.7% more than last year. 55.5% of the 4.51 million passenger cars were diesel-driven (2.50 million vehicles).

In 2011, as in the previous years, the brand VW dominated the Austrian road scene with 923 018 vehicles (share: 20.5%). Opel defended the second place with a market share of 7.9%, followed by Audi (6.8%), Ford (6.2%), Renault (incl. Dacia; 5.5%), Mercedes (incl. Smart and Maybach; 5.3%), BMW (incl. MINI; 5.1%), Peugeot (4.5%), Skoda (4.4%) and Toyota (4.2%).

41.3% of the current stock of motor vehicles occurs in the provinces of Lower Austria and Upper Austria; Vienna adds 13.4%.

Among the provinces, Burgenland reached, with 618 passenger cars per 1 000 habitants, the highest level of motorisation, followed by Lower Austria (612), Carinthia (591), Upper Austria (589) as well as Styria (568), Salzburg (527), Vorarlberg (512) and Tyrol (505). Vienna, in the beginning 1970’s on top, holds the last position in 2011 (394).

In the long-term run, the one million threshold concerning passenger cars has been exceeded in 1970 for the first time with a total of 1.20 million units. Over the past 21 years, the stock of passenger cars increased by more than one half (+50.9% or +1.52 million vehicles since 1990) to 4.51 million units. This increase resulted from the extensive rise of diesel-driven cars, whose number is more than six times higher than 20 years ago (2.50 million pieces). Petrol-driven passenger cars showed a decrease by 22.7%.
