Considering the reference day 31 December 2011, a total of 6.20 million motor vehicles, including 4.51 million passenger cars, 436 315 tractors used for agriculture and forestry, 390 704 lorries and 409 675 motorcycles (incl. lightweight motorcycles) were registered in Austria, by 1.7% more than last year. 55.5% of the 4.51 million passenger cars were diesel-driven (2.50 million vehicles).
In 2011, as in the previous years, the brand VW dominated the Austrian road scene with 923 018 vehicles (share: 20.5%). Opel defended the second place with a market share of 7.9%, followed by Audi (6.8%), Ford (6.2%), Renault (incl. Dacia; 5.5%), Mercedes (incl. Smart and Maybach; 5.3%), BMW (incl. MINI; 5.1%), Peugeot (4.5%), Skoda (4.4%) and Toyota (4.2%).
41.3% of the current stock of motor vehicles occurs in the provinces of Lower Austria and Upper Austria; Vienna adds 13.4%.
