The analysis of commuters gives an overview of the distances covered to reach the place of work or location of school/university.
Commuters are employed persons and pupils or students, who have to travel between their place of residence and their place of work or educational institution. Employed persons and pupils or students whose place of work or educational institution is in the same building where they live, are included, too.

The number of economically active commuters is not derived from all economically active persons in total, but from their subset "employed persons". Women and men on maternity/parental leave with formal job attachment are not included, because even though they can return to their place of work after their temporary absence, they are not part of the commuting traffic until then.
This group includes all persons, who are currently attending a school/educational institution and who are not employed. Employed students are counted as economically active commuters, not as school commuters.
All other persons, who have their main residence in Austria and are counted in the census, but are neither pupils/students nor employed (for example: unemployed, persons on parental leave, children under the age of 15 not attending school, people who receive a pension, etc.).
